CERAMIC STAINS

OUR CERAMIC STAINS COME IN POWDER FORM AND CAN BE USED TO COLOUR GLAZES, UNDERGLAZES, OVERGLAZES, ENGOBES, SLIPS AND CLAY BODIES. IN GENERAL, THEY HAVE GREATER TEMPERATURE STABILITY THAN MANY OTHER COMMERCIALLY AVAILABLE STAINS. THEY ARE SUITABLE FOR USE FROM 1000 DEGREES (CONE 06) UP TO 1300 DEGREES (CONE 10). CHECK THE DESCRIPTION OF EACH INDIVIDUAL STAIN FOR IT’S MAXIMUM HEAT RESISTANCE.

ALWAYS TEST THE STAIN FOR YOUR OWN SITUATION AS RESULTS MAY VARY DEPENDING ON THE MEDIUM TO WHICH YOU ARE ADDING THE STAIN, AND THE SURFACE YOU ARE APPLYING IT TO. LIKE ALL CERAMIC COLORANTS/OXIDES, RESULTS CAN END UP BEING VERY DIFFERENT DEPENDING ON THE FIRING RANGE AND THE FIRING ATMOSPHERE.

STAINS CAN BE ADDED UP TO ABOUT 10% BUT REMEMBER THAT BY ADDING STAIN TO A BODY (E.G. CLAY OR GLAZE) YOU ARE DILUTING THE OTHER RAW MATERIALS THAT MAKE UP THAT BODY. THIS MAY AFFECT THE PERFORMANCE OF THAT BODY, SO WE ALWAYS RECOMMEND RUNNING SOME SMALL TESTS FIRST. ALTERING THE PERCENTAGE OF A STAIN WILL GIVE VARIED STRENGTH OF COLOUR, AND RESULTS WILL RANGE FROM PASTELS THROUGH TO BRIGHT VIVID COLOUR.

STAINS CAN BE BLENDED TO CREATE YOUR OWN UNIQUE COLOURS.

IF ADDING TO A GLAZE OR SLIP, RUN IT THROUGH AT LEAST A 100 MESH SIEVE TO REMOVE CLUMPS AND AVOID COLOUR SPECKLES.
